Padres shore up rotation at deadline with Mize and Ray pickups
Hours before the 3 p.m. deadline, the Padres bolstered their rotation by acquiring Casey Mize from Detroit and Robbie Ray from San Francisco, plus infielder Gage Workman, at the expense of Kash Mayfield and Jackson Wolf. Mize owns a 2.70 ERA in 16 starts (with an IL stint for a groin strain) and has pitched well since returning, while Ray has a 1.09 ERA over his past eight appearances. San Diego had already landed Ray earlier that day, aided by salary relief, and is hopeful for late-August returns from Joe Musgrove and Nick Pivetta as they pivot away from a bullpen-heavy approach to stabilize the rotation.
