Scientists Solve Rubber's Century‑Old Toughness Mystery

USF engineers simulated reinforced rubber—rubber with carbon black—and published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, showing that carbon black creates a Poisson’s ratio mismatch that prevents thinning and boosts volume, stiffness, and strength; by combining particle networks, sticky interactions, and space-filling effects, they offer a unified explanation that could reduce design trial-and-error and improve safety for critical infrastructure.

"Physicists Create Counting Rubber: A Metamaterial Breakthrough"

Physicists at Leiden University have created a block of rubber that can count simply by being carved into a ceiling, floor, and pairs of beams. The rubber block, called a "beam counter," can record the number of times it has been pushed by bending its beams in a specific sequence. This simple yet impressive feat demonstrates that inanimate objects can perform mathematical tasks without sophisticated circuit boards. The researchers believe this rubber counting mechanism could have applications in fields such as bridge engineering and could potentially be expanded to count larger numbers.

Verstappen dominates Miami Grand Prix as track surface improves.

Miami GP managing partner Tom Garfinkel says the decision not to waterblast the Hard Rock Stadium track surface will pay off in the long run as it will age naturally and improve over time. Lack of grip on the surface posed issues for drivers during the race weekend, but race winner Max Verstappen reckoned it was good enough by the race. Garfinkel is contemplating getting more support races on board for 2024 to improve grip. Changes made to the Turn 15/16 chicane also worked well, according to Garfinkel.
