Lab Tests Reveal Deep-Sea Mining Rocks Can Ignite Spontaneously
USGS researchers discovered that certain deep-sea rocks spontaneously combusted in a lab after being crushed and exposed to air. The study, published in Scientific Reports, identifies nanocrystalline marcasite as the unstable mineral responsible. This finding highlights a significant safety hazard for the emerging deep-sea mining industry, as surface conditions differ drastically from the deep ocean.
