A runaway piglet named Wilbur, captured on video racing through West Hollywood on Aug. 15, has been adopted by Grammy-winning songwriter Diane Warren. Warren’s rep confirmed the adoption after viral clips drew her attention; Wilbur will live at a sanctuary with “gourmet salads” and other animal friends. LA Animal Services had considered a Silent Auction if multiple adopters pursued the pig. Warren, a longtime animal advocate, has previously helped relocate other runaway farm animals, including a loose cow from Pico Rivera to Farm Sanctuary.

An Argentine court recognized two goldfish, Fede and Magui, as sentient beings with rights after a complaint by Jaulas Vacías. The fish were moved from a sunlit display to a 2,500-liter tank at a sanctuary, and the court ordered they remain in the care of their adopter, framing the case under animal-protection law (Law 14.346). The ruling could set a precedent for protecting animals in inadequate conditions and marks a shift away from treating animals as mere objects.
New York Gov. Hochul signed a sweeping package protecting immigrant residents, including barring local police from enforcing civil immigration laws, prohibiting ICE from entering sensitive locations, and allowing lawsuits against ICE for constitutional violations, as she faces pushback from the Trump administration and ongoing protests around detention facilities.
Democratic leaders in New York, led by Gov. Kathy Hochul, have reached a deal to enact sanctuary-style protections designed to limit federal ICE deportations on state soil, block civil removals in key areas (schools, polling places, libraries and houses of worship), and empower residents to sue federal officials for constitutional rights violations. The package positions New York as a counterweight to Trump’s immigration agenda ahead of Hochul’s re-election bid, while Republicans warn the measures could jeopardize public safety and draw federal pushback.
Trump’s border czar warned that New York’s sanctuary‑style bills would trigger a surge of ICE enforcement, while Gov. Hochul says Trump told her there would be no surge unless New York asked for one; NY lawmakers are pursuing limits on local police cooperation with ICE and other protections, signaling a blue‑state pushback against federal deportation efforts.

Iris Lavan docked in Kochi on 4 March, and Sri Lanka later granted sanctuary to Iris Bushehr on 5 March, illustrating mounting regional tensions as the US-Israel campaign against Iran continues.
Protesters interrupted a Sunday service at Cities Church in St. Paul to question pastor David Easterwood’s ICE ties, led by Nekima Levy Armstrong. The roughly 25-minute demonstration highlights the national sanctuary debate amid a broader crackdown on immigration, drawing a Justice Department probe and mixed reactions from religious groups as federal agents’ actions in the Twin Cities continue to inflame tensions.
DHS publicized Operation Metro Surge as evidence of removing the ‘worst of the worst’ criminal illegal aliens from Minnesota, criticizing Gov. Walz and Mayor Frey for not honoring ICE detainers and accusing sanctuary policies of endangering residents. The agency says more than 1,360 people (including violent criminals) are in the state’s custody, with about 470 released back onto the streets, and notes yesterday’s arrests of individuals described as rapists, armed robbers, and drug traffickers as part of the effort to make Minnesota safe.
