
Astronaut radiation shield in a vest shows promise for Moon and Mars missions, Artemis I study finds
A StemRad AstroRad vest tested on Artemis I phantoms could cut radiation doses from solar particle events by up to ~60%, potentially reducing lifetime cancer risk and enabling safer long-duration space travel. Intended as an emergency countermeasure worn during elevated radiation, the ~57-pound vest complements a storm shelter and could be used in exploration beyond Earth, with further work including space-based manufacturing of shielding components.
