Space Force probes orbital depots to speed satellite servicing

The U.S. Space Force, via Space Systems Command and SpaceWERX, is exploring the design and viability of orbital warehouses to store fuel and supplies for servicing satellites, with plans for two on‑orbit demonstrations in 2027 to test in‑space logistics, propulsion, and depot operations. Highlighted efforts include Starfish Space’s US‑Otter 1 rendezvous/docking and Astroscale’s Provisioner refueler, all part of accelerating in‑space servicing and enabling rapid responses to space threats under the Objective Force 2040 roadmap.

"Scout Space and Stanford University Secure Space Force Contract Extension"

Scout Space, in partnership with Stanford University, has been awarded a $1.5 million contract extension by the U.S. Space Force to help characterize spacecraft and debris objects as part of the Orbital Prime project. The project aims to develop technologies for debris removal and in-space services. Scout Space, a startup focused on on-orbit navigation and tracking, won the Phase 2 Small Business Technology Transfer contract, requiring collaboration with academic or nonprofit institutions. The partnership with Stanford University's Space Rendezvous Laboratory will advance technologies for in-space servicing, assembly, and manufacturing, including the deployment of new machine learning algorithms for autonomous spacecraft navigation.
