
Ring that reads glucose from sweat could spare diabetics from finger-pricks
UCSD researchers have developed a prototype smart ring that uses an osmotic hydrogel to pull sweat and electrochemical sensors to measure glucose and other biomarkers. In tests, the ring’s glucose readings closely matched commercial CGMs and ketone readings matched blood meters, suggesting a noninvasive alternative to finger-pricks. The device still needs extensive validation, has a 12-hour battery life, and remains bulky in prototype form, but could benefit diabetics, athletes, and other health monitoring applications.
