Untouched reefs provide a natural baseline as planted structures host more corals in Singapore trial

In Singapore’s Sisters’ Islands Marine Park, eight artificial reef structures were deployed in 2018; six were planted with corals and two were left unplanted as a control. By February 2022, surveys counted 1,961 live coral colonies from 43 genera on the planted structures, compared with 95 colonies from seven genera on the two unplanted structures. Early inhabitants on all structures were barnacles and bivalves, with natural coral settlement appearing about two years after deployment. The two unplanted plots provide a baseline for natural recruitment, while the planted plots show substantial coral establishment, illustrating how natural and human-assisted reef growth interact in this setting.

Top 7 Medical Innovations Offering Hope in 2024

In 2024, significant medical breakthroughs included the availability of a non-prescription birth control pill, heart valves that grow with the patient, successful pig-to-human organ transplants, a blood test for Alzheimer's, a combined COVID-19 and flu vaccine, insights into women's susceptibility to autoimmune diseases, and a drug to reduce peanut allergy risks. "Florida's Mass Migration: Where Are Floridians Fleeing To?"

Thousands of people who moved to Florida during the pandemic are now leaving due to the relentless heat, damaging hurricanes, and high living costs. Many transplants found the state to be more expensive than expected, with soaring homeowners insurance rates, expensive car insurance, and rising property taxes. Some also cited traffic, dangerous wildlife, and the state's gun laws as reasons for their disillusionment, leading them to seek a better life elsewhere.

Advancements in Animal Research Pave the Way for Successful Organ Transplants

A Massachusetts-based company, eGenesis, has successfully kept a monkey alive for two years with a pig kidney, marking a significant step towards solving the human organ shortage. The pig donor had undergone 69 gene edits to reduce the risk of rejection and eliminate the chance of a pig virus passing to the organ's new host. With over 100,000 Americans waiting for a new organ, this breakthrough could potentially open the door for more patients to receive viable transplants. However, further research is needed to determine the long-term effects and efficacy of pig-to-human transplants before human trials can begin.

Revolutionary Pig Kidney Transplants: A Family's Choice Sparks Medical Breakthrough

The body of Maurice "Mo" Miller, who tragically passed away, has become part of an experiment at NYU Langone Health to potentially ease the organ transplant shortage by using organs from genetically modified pigs. Surgeons successfully replaced Miller's kidneys with a pig kidney, which has been functioning like a healthy kidney for over a month, the longest a pig kidney has ever worked in a person. The experiment aims to study how pig kidneys can reach longer timepoints in donated bodies, providing vital lessons for future xenotransplantation. The success of the experiment could help address the national waiting list of over 100,000 people in need of organ transplants, particularly kidneys.

A family of recent California transplants in Las Vegas lost their new home in a fire suspected to have been caused by fireworks on Independence Day. The fire quickly consumed the house, leaving the family with nothing. Although they didn't have renters insurance, the landlord has allowed them to stay at another property rent-free for the time being. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family recover.

Lucy Dee's Organs Save Five, Amidst Funeral and Violence in West Bank

Five people have received life-saving transplants from organs of a British-Israeli woman killed in a suspected Palestinian gun attack on Friday. The surgeries were carried out at two hospitals in Israel shortly before the funeral of Lucy Dee, 48, who died from her injuries on Monday. Lucy's husband, Rabbi Leo Dee, told the Times of Israel that the family made the decision to donate her organs because "everything... that is lifesaving should be given".
