MIT Unveils Puffin-Inspired Robot That Flies and Dives to Explore Oceans

MIT engineers built a lightweight, puffin-inspired robot capable of both flight and underwater swimming. The craft uses a 34.5-inch wingspan, waterproofed components, and a motorized tail; in air it flaps at 5–6 Hz and can sprint above the water, while underwater it uses its wings to swim and stays level without sinking. Weighing about 250 g, it can fly about 6 km on a full charge and swim roughly 2 km underwater. Tested in a lab tank and Lake Geneva, the team envisions using the robot to study coral reefs, track fish, and monitor algae, potentially carrying it to remote sites to collect samples or data.

Robotic Sub Uncovers Rugged Underbelly of Dotson Ice Shelf

A Swedish autonomous underwater vehicle named Ran mapped the Dotson Ice Shelf’s hidden underside, revealing a complex landscape of terraces, channels and teardrop-shaped cavities carved by ocean currents. The 2022 mission covered about 55 square miles across roughly 1,000 km in 27 days, providing the first high-resolution view of the ice shelf’s base. Ran disappeared on a 2024 follow-up dive, but the data show melting beneath Antarctica is more intricate than models predict, with implications for ice-shelf stability and potential sea-level rise.

Rare Ocean Creature Captured on Film by Scientists

Researchers at the Schmidt Ocean Institute have captured footage of a unique polychaete, a type of bristle worm, using an underwater robot in the Chile Margin. The creature, noted for its iridescent bristles, has gained significant attention on social media, being likened to a 'deep sea Christmas tree.' Polychaetes are diverse marine worms that play crucial roles in ocean ecosystems, with some species being bioluminescent and others used as fishing bait or food.

"Colombia Plans Billion-Dollar Treasure Recovery from 300-Year-Old Shipwreck"

Colombia has announced plans to recover items of "incalculable value" from the legendary San Jose galleon, which sank in 1708 laden with gold, silver, and emeralds estimated to be worth billions of dollars. An underwater robot will be used to extract items from the wreck, with the operation costing over $4.5 million. The location of the expedition is being kept secret to protect the site from treasure hunters. The ship's bounty has sparked a dispute between Spain, Bolivia's Qhara Qhara nation, and a U.S.-based salvage company, with Colombia seeking to use its own resources to recover the wreck and ensure it remains in the country.
