Bianfu Cave Fossils Reveal Denisovan Lifestyle and Anatomy in Southwest China
Archaeologists in Yunnan, China, have identified seven Denisovan fossils at Bianfu Cave, including the first known arm bone, four teeth, and two skull fragments. Dating to 167,000–134,000 years ago, these remains were found alongside over 1,300 stone tools and 60,000 animal bone fragments. The discovery, published in Nature, confirms Denisovans lived in subtropical forests and hunted large game, filling a geographic gap in their known range. While DNA was not preserved, protein analysis confirmed their identity, offering new insights into their anatomy and daily life.
