Japan quake rattles Yamanashi, Kanagawa amid landslide fears
A magnitude-5.6 earthquake struck Yamanashi and nearby prefectures late Friday, rattling Tokyo’s outskirts and triggering at least one landslide as heavy rains from tropical storms persisted. The Japan Meteorological Agency recorded strong shaking (shindo 6 in Fujikawaguchiko, 5 in Otsuki and parts of Shizuoka/Kanagawa); no tsunami was detected. Authorities warned of a 10-20% chance of a larger aftershock in the coming days, and transportation networks faced disruptions, with JR rail services and expressways experiencing delays or closures. A crisis-management center was set up to coordinate the response.
