Coal Miners Unearth Rare Mammoth Fossil in North Dakota

Coal miners in North Dakota discovered a well-preserved mammoth tusk, leading to the excavation of more than 20 bones from a partial mammoth skeleton. The find is one of the most complete mammoth skeletons discovered in the state and is considered scientifically significant. The bones will be cleaned and stabilized at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum paleontology lab, and efforts are underway to determine where the remains can be displayed for public viewing. Various types of mammoths, including woolly and Columbian mammoths, lived in North Dakota during the Ice Age.
