"Black Holes Thrive in Busy Galactic Communities"

Astronomers are using the James Webb Space Telescope to study the neighborhoods of supermassive black holes and their host galaxies. They are particularly interested in understanding the rapid growth of quasars, which are powered by black holes. By examining protoclusters, dense regions of galaxies that evolve quickly, astronomers hope to uncover the connection between quasars and protoclusters. The Webb telescope's wide-field slitless spectrograph allows for the simultaneous mapping of entire cosmic cities, providing unprecedented views of quasar environments. This research aims to shed light on the formation and evolution of galaxies in these special neighborhoods and how they differ from more sparse regions of the universe.
