"Searching the Cosmos: Astronomers Seek Gravitational Waves from Supernova 1987A"

Astronomers are searching for gravitational waves coming from the remnant of Supernova 1987A, which occurred in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The explosion left behind a neutron star, and imperfections on its surface could generate gravitational waves. Previous attempts using the LIGO and VIRGO observatories were unsuccessful, but a recent study describes an enhanced search using wider frequency bands. Although no gravitational waves have been detected yet, further searches are planned using data from Advanced LIGO, VIRGO, and the Cosmic Explorer observatory.
