Scientists have detected an "extremely exciting" gravitational-wave signal from the far side of the universe, believed to be from a collision between a neutron star and an unidentified object in the "mass gap" range. The signal, named GW230529, was captured by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Collaboration and marks the first time gravitational waves have been used to find an object. Ongoing analysis of the phenomenon is expected to provide a better understanding of astrophysical processes.
