Researchers in Madagascar have discovered a new species of tuft-tailed rat, Eliurus sp. nova, distinguished by a cluster of long hairs on its tail. The nocturnal rodent was found during surveys of the island and genetic analysis confirmed it as a previously unknown species. The discovery highlights the need for urgent conservation actions to protect the biodiversity of Madagascar, which has lost nearly a third of its forests in the past two decades.
