Multiple Asteroid Alerts: Close Approaches and Record-breaking Sizes

A house-sized asteroid named 2023 RR5 is set to pass closer to Earth than the moon's orbit today. Estimated to be around 20 feet in diameter, the asteroid will come within approximately 130,000 miles of Earth, about half the distance between Earth and the moon. While 2023 RR5 is not classified as a potentially hazardous asteroid, larger asteroids of 100-200 meters in diameter could cause regional disasters if they were to impact Earth. NASA has identified around 31,000 near-Earth objects, with 2023 RR5 being one of the roughly 1 million asteroids discovered so far.
