New data from NASA's James Webb Telescope confirms the existence of a "snow line" in planet-forming disks, providing evidence that planets receive water from ice-covered fragments of rock that form in the outer reaches of protoplanetary disks. The telescope observed four young protoplanetary disks and found massive amounts of cold water vapor past the snow line, confirming that ice sublimating from frozen pebbles can deliver water to planets. The research team also discovered that frozen pebbles in larger systems have difficulty getting through gaps and tend to accumulate in pressure traps, while compact disks showed an excess of cold water vapor emissions just outside the snow line.
