Seeds Cultivated in Space for Climate Adaptation on Earth

Scientists are using the unique environment of space to induce genetic mutations in seeds, with the aim of developing resilient crops that can adapt to the challenges of climate change. Seeds of sorghum and Arabidopsis were sent to the International Space Station (ISS) to be exposed to cosmic radiation and microgravity. By selectively breeding plants grown from these mutated seeds, scientists hope to create new crop strains that have improved yields, resistance to diseases, and tolerance to climate phenomena such as drought and high heat. This research could contribute to food security and sustainability on Earth.
