China's Astronauts Cultivate Vegetables in Space to Support Deep Space Exploration

China's Shenzhou 16 astronauts have been successfully growing vegetables aboard the Tiangong space station as part of their preparations for deep space exploration. The astronauts have cultivated lettuce, cherry tomatoes, and green onions using specialized equipment. The China Astronaut Research and Training Center has also set up replicas on Earth to compare results and aid in the analysis of plant growth in space. This vegetable cultivation apparatus is a key component of the Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) and has potential applications for future crewed lunar and Mars missions. China aims to put astronauts on the moon before 2030 and plans to establish a moon base, the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), in the next decade.
