A 2.9-ton pallet carrying used batteries was jettisoned from the International Space Station in March 2021 and is expected to re-enter Earth's atmosphere between March 8 and 9, 2024. The Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief in Germany issued a warning about the potential re-entry, stating that luminous phenomena or a sonic boom may be possible. The pallet, known as EP9, is loaded with old Nickel-Hydrogen batteries and is predicted to not completely burn up on re-entry, with about half a tonne of fragments likely to hit the Earth's surface.
