Chicago Fed chief warns AI boom may force aggressive rate hikes
Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee warned that the Federal Reserve may need to adopt an 'aggressive' and 'frontloaded' interest rate strategy if current inflation is driven by demand rather than supply shocks. He highlighted that AI infrastructure spending and services sector price growth could be overheating the economy, requiring higher rates than the single hike projected by the Fed's median dot plot. Goolsbee noted that while supply shocks from the Iran war and tariffs are persistent, demand-driven inflation poses a greater risk of escalation, necessitating a stronger monetary response to balance aggregate output.
