From Belief to Evidence: A Chiropractor's Exit

A former chiropractor recounts his early hope that chiropractic offered a humane, concrete alternative to medicine, then chronicles how the field's diagnostics, marketing, and business practices rely on belief and profit rather than solid evidence. He describes questionable methods like applied kinesiology, the push for lifelong care plans, and a two-tier system where leaders critique medicine from afar while practitioners handle day-to-day billing and expectations. After decades of study showing few consistent benefits beyond non-specific factors (placebo, ritual, natural history) and with better science revealing diminishing apparent effects, he leaves the profession and reflects on the ethical and professional failures that harmed patients and stymied accountability.

Chiropractic Technique: Pain Relief or Stroke Risk?

Cardiologists, including Dr. Danielle Belardo, are raising concerns about the potential stroke risks associated with chiropractic neck manipulations. These procedures can cause vertebral artery dissections, leading to strokes, as seen in several cases reported by Dr. Belardo and other medical professionals. While the American Chiropractic Association defends the safety of neck adjustments, some doctors argue the risks outweigh the benefits. Calls for a registry to track such incidents aim to gather data and potentially revise medical guidelines to ensure patient safety.

Dr. Mandell recommends doing this exercise three times a day for 20-30 seconds each time to improve posture and relieve back pain.

The Safety of Neck Manipulation by Chiropractors.

Chiropractic treatments provide pain relief for many people, but the delicate nature of the spine, particularly the upper vertebrae of the neck, can result in devastating complications. One injury in particular, arterial dissection, in which blood vessels that supply blood from the heart to the brain are torn, is of high concern. Although the risk is rare, several studies have shown the risk of arterial dissection and stroke to be three to 12 times higher in people who’ve recently had a neck manipulation. As a result, many spine specialists warn that chiropractic manipulation of the neck can be dangerous.
