A powerful nor'easter battered the Northeast this weekend, causing significant coastal damage and power outages in New Jersey and Long Island. While New York City transit and power services largely restored by Monday, New Jersey faces ongoing flooding and infrastructure damage.
Tropical Storm Marie off California unleashed powerful surf along the Orange County coast, damaging Dana Point beachfront homes (about a dozen red-tagged and deemed uninhabitable) while Long Beach and Malibu saw evacuations as waves reach 6–10 feet and elevated tides threaten coastal areas.
Experts warn that a recent series of extreme waves causing significant damage to a U.S. military base in the Marshall Islands may signal more perilous coastal behavior in the future, potentially exacerbated by rising sea levels due to climate change. The waves inundated one-third of the island of Roi-Namor, prompting evacuations and highlighting the vulnerability of low-lying areas to powerful, destructive waves. Factors such as coastal topography, weather conditions, and tide cycles may have contributed to the strength of the waves, with recovery efforts expected to be lengthy and challenging.
Waves over 30 feet tall crashed into parts of the South Africa coastline, causing damage to vehicles and buildings. The high surf was generated by a strong storm in the Southern Ocean. This occurred during a time of high tides, exacerbating the damage. The affected area lies in the region known as the "Roaring Forties," characterized by strong winds and storms. At least two deaths and several injuries have been linked to the heavy surf.
