
Driver with DUI history linked to Milligan University cyclist crash that killed two
A North Carolina man, 69-year-old John Alexander Benfield, is jailed after his 2003 Subaru struck 11 Milligan University cyclists on Highway 19E near Hampton, Tennessee, killing Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rogers and injuring several others. Investigators say he did not brake or evade, and a marijuana odor was noted in the vehicle; he has a long criminal history including a 1990 Florida DUI. He’s charged with two counts of vehicular homicide by recklessness and five counts of aggravated assault by vehicle by recklessness; bail was set at $150,000.
