Wild dogs stage record 2,485-mile dispersal across Zambia in hunt for mates
A trio of African wild dogs completed a record 2,485-mile dispersal across Zambia in eight months to find mating opportunities, zigzagging around human settlements; two of the three females died. The study suggests eastern and southern African wild dog populations may remain connected, but poaching snares and habitat fragmentation remain critical threats, underscoring the need for landscape-scale connectivity beyond protected areas.
