Delaware Moves to Contain CWD With Emergency Deer-Hunting Rules

Delaware’s DNREC issued emergency deer-hunting regulations to limit the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease after its initial detection in central Sussex County. The rules create a CWD Management Zone covering Wildlife Management Zones 14 and 16, ban bait/urine-based buck lures, require deer harvested in the CMZ to be checked at two designated stations during the November shotgun season, and restrict moving harvested deer out of the CMZ or relocating fawns from within it. Hunters can have deer tested at state-wide drop-off locations at no cost, and an addendum to the Hunting and Trapping Guide will provide expanded CWD information. The emergency measures last 120 days (potentially extendable by 60 days) and must go through standard rulemaking with public comment to become permanent.

Delaware Detects First Wild Deer Case of Chronic Wasting Disease, Initiates Response Plan

Delaware has confirmed its first case of Chronic Wasting Disease in a wild white-tailed deer, with USDA confirmation; a second deer is awaiting confirmation. DNREC has activated its CWD Response Plan, creating a 5-mile CWD Management Zone around the Sussex County harvest and planning cluster sampling, with possible mandatory deer check-ins for testing next season. There is no known human risk, but hunters should test meat and follow biosecurity guidance while officials conduct ongoing surveillance and hold public briefings.

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) has issued warnings of poor air quality in Delaware due to wildfires in eastern Canada emitting particulate matter into the atmosphere. The Delaware Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS), Division of Public Health (DPH) has advised all individuals to limit prolonged or heavy physical activity and time spent outdoors and to stay indoors, preferably in a space with filtered air. DNREC has declared a Code Red Action Day for particulate matter for Wednesday, June 7 and Thursday, June 8.
