Emergent BioSolutions Implements Major Workforce Reduction, Cuts 400 Jobs
Emergent BioSolutions, a biotech company, has announced plans to lay off approximately 400 employees and scale back operations at some of its facilities. The company aims to focus on core products such as the overdose reversal nasal spray Narcan and anthrax vaccines, moving away from contract drug development and manufacturing. The job cuts, along with other initiatives, are expected to save over $100 million annually. Smaller biotech companies have been struggling to finance drug development programs, impacting their ability to deliver contract research services. Emergent expects to incur an estimated cost of $19-21 million in the third quarter of 2023.
