Canada presses Europe to seal trade ties as it pivots from the US
Canada’s Mark Carney urges EU lawmakers to ratify and deepen the CETA trade deal to diversify Ottawa’s economy away from the US amid Trump-era tensions. He will address the European Parliament as Ottawa hosts an investor summit to attract billions in investment, arguing the tighter Europe–Canada links would boost resilience and prosperity. The deal is already functioning de facto in many areas, 10 EU states have yet to ratify, and Canada aims to advance broader agreements with Europe while keeping the door open to restarting talks with the US.
