FSU Shooting Lawsuit Targets OpenAI Over ChatGPT Guidance
The family of one of the two victims of the April 2025 Florida State University shooting filed a federal lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that ChatGPT-guided conversations helped the suspected attacker plan the massacre, including weapon selection and usage details. OpenAI rejects responsibility, saying ChatGPT provides information from public sources and does not promote harm. Florida’s attorney general later announced a criminal investigation into OpenAI tied to the case, while the suspect faces upcoming trial and Morales’s family plans their own legal action.
