GMT and ELT Set the Pace in the Next-Gen Ground Telescope Race
Ars Technica reports that the race for the next giant ground telescope centers on two players—the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) and the European Extremely Large Telescope (ELT)—after other projects stalled. GMT has broken ground in Chile’s Atacama, seven mirrors cast, and about half of the roughly $2 billion cost raised, with a long road to first light; the ELT is poised to come online first, around 2029. GMT officials stress complementary science and instrument development, including adaptive optics and exoplanet studies, and ongoing collaboration with space missions to advance ground‑based astronomy.
