Georgia gas tax holiday ends as Kemp declines extension

Gov. Kemp will not extend Georgia's gas tax suspension, which ends at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, removing roughly 33 cents per gallon on gasoline and 37.3 cents on diesel; the state will cover the shortfall from its surplus, while current averages run about $3.83 for regular gas and $4.92 for diesel. Drivers are advised to shop around for prices and use fuel-saving tips.

Georgia gas tax break ends Tuesday—fill up before prices rise

Georgia’s temporary suspension of the state motor fuel tax will expire at 11:59 p.m. June 2 unless Gov. Kemp extends it again, meaning drivers could see higher prices soon. The tax break saves about 33 cents per gallon (roughly $14 a month) but costs roughly $200 million a month in transportation funding. As of Monday, Georgia averaged $3.79 per gallon (metro Atlanta $3.85); the national average was about $4.32, aided by the suspension. Kemp hasn’t announced an extension, and AAA warns rising prices can delay refueling, while experts suggest refilling before tanks are a quarter full.

"Georgia Governor Criticizes Biden's EV Policy at Battery Material Maker"

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp criticized President Biden's electric vehicle policy at the groundbreaking of Anovion Technologies, a company that received over $100 million to refine graphite for electric batteries from the infrastructure law Biden signed. Kemp claimed that Georgia's electric mobility boom is due to the state's investment-friendly environment, not federal government policies. Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff, who was also present, argued that Georgia's investment boom wouldn't have happened without Democratic policies. The two could be rivals for the Senate seat in 2026.
