Scientists Successfully Grow Human-Like Kidneys in Pigs and Develop Artificial Kidney
Scientists have successfully grown a humanised kidney inside a pig, marking the first time a human organ has been grown inside another species. Using human-pig chimeric embryos, the researchers implanted them in surrogate pig mothers, resulting in kidneys containing mostly human cells after 28 days of development. Pigs are an attractive target for growing human organs due to their physiological similarities with humans. While this breakthrough offers a potential solution to the severe organ shortage, the study has limitations, including ethical concerns and the need to address rejection issues caused by porcine-origin cells.
