KLM Flight Diverts After Former CEO’s Power Bank Ignites Cabin Fire
On September 17, 2026, KLM flight KL735 from Amsterdam to Curaçao was forced to divert back to Amsterdam after a power bank ignited in the cabin. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-300ER, departed 118 minutes late and returned approximately 5 hours and 20 minutes after takeoff. The fire, which damaged a business-class seat and cabin wall, was extinguished by the crew. The passenger responsible was identified as Camiel Eurlings, KLM’s former CEO (2013–2014). Eurlings reportedly used the power bank while sleeping, violating airline rules that prohibit charging power banks in-flight. KLM stated it would not issue fines, and passengers were rebooked on other flights.
