Stitch by Stitch: Knitting as a Quiet Path to Health
Knitting is being explored as an affordable, portable therapy to improve emotional regulation and help replace harmful behaviours—from nail-biting and doomscrolling to smoking and drug use. Personal stories and small treatment-centre studies suggest knitting can calm distress and support habit-change, likening repetitive movements to EMDR and noting possible brain-activation that reduces stress. However, evidence is limited: most data come from surveys with small, biased samples and there are few large, controlled trials to prove causality or generalize beyond specific groups. Knitting is not a universal cure, but many experts see real potential and call for more rigorous research.
