Rising Seas Put Kolkata and Mumbai at Immediate Risk, UN Warns
A United Nations report warns that rising seas already threaten Kolkata and Mumbai with permanent inundation, placing more than 14 million people at immediate risk of losing their homes. Globally, sea level rise is accelerating due to glacier melt and ocean warming, threatening coastal infrastructure, water security, health and livelihoods, particularly in deltas. The report calls for integrated, basin-wide policies, better data, financing, and protective measures to safeguard vulnerable populations and support long-term adaptation.
