Japan braces for Typhoon No. 13 as evacuations mount and flights are canceled
Japan ordered evacuations for about 260,000 people in Kagoshima and Okinawa as Typhoon No. 13, a Category 1 storm with winds up to 144 kph and gusts to 198 kph, approached from the south, leading to more than 500 flight cancellations and warnings of strong winds, heavy rain and potential flooding; Kumamoto residents remain in evacuation centers after last week’s earthquake, and Toyota suspended nine factories as the storm looms and temperatures rise toward 36C.
