Sulfur compound unlocks stronger HGF signaling to boost aging muscle repair

Kyushu University researchers report that lipoic acid trisulfide (LASSS), a sulfur-based antioxidant, can bind to hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and enhance its interaction with the c-Met receptor while reducing nitration. This creates a more active form of HGF—dubbed a potential “Super HGF”—that strengthens muscle repair in aging. In lab tests and a mouse model of muscle atrophy, LASSS improved HGF signaling and resisted damage much more effectively than glutathione trisulfide (GSSSG). While promising for preserving muscle health during aging or inactivity, further in vivo safety and efficacy studies are needed before considering human use.
