Trump Signs Sweeping Russia Sanctions Law, Granting 100% Tariff Power Over Energy Buyers
US President Donald Trump signed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, a 48-page bill passed by the House with bipartisan support. The legislation authorizes tariffs of up to 100% on the top five purchasers of Russian oil and gas, primarily targeting China and India. It also expands sanctions on Russian financial institutions, Vladimir Putin, and Iran’s energy and weapons sectors. While Ukraine and pro-Ukraine lawmakers hailed the move as a critical tool to choke off Moscow’s war funding, Democratic leaders warned the broad executive authority could harm American consumers through inflation. The bill includes exceptions for nations reducing Russian gas dependency by less than 15%.
