
Sympathetic Flares Across 16,000 Stars Hint at a Universal Magnetic Mechanism
A Tufts-led study analyzed about 200,000 stellar flares from 16,000 stars and found sympathetic flaring—secondary flares triggered by a primary one—occurs widely beyond the Sun. Using a new algorithm called TOFFEE, researchers distinguished related flares and discovered similar rates on M-dwarfs (about 4–9%), suggesting a common mechanism for stellar magnetic activity across different star types. The findings, published in The Astrophysical Journal, expand our understanding of how stars flare across the galaxy.
