Desert Fossils Trace the Rebirth of Marine Life After the Dinosaur Age
Researchers at Qreiya 3 in Egypt’s eastern desert recovered about 500 fossil fishes, including early relatives of tunas, jacks, moonfishes and pipefishes, dating to roughly 4 million years after the asteroid that ended the dinosaurs. The site shows that some modern marine groups were already present soon after the extinction while many Cretaceous lineages disappeared, offering crucial insights into how modern ocean life rebuilt itself in the aftermath.
