Madison’s Dementia Village Redefines Memory Care by 2027

Madison, Wisconsin is set to open the United States’ first dementia village, a $40 million, six-acre Agrace project due in 2027. It will feature eight households with private bedrooms, shared kitchens and living spaces, and a Main Street-style campus including shops, a theater and an arts center to give memory-care residents greater autonomy. The village will house up to 65 full-time residents and serve 40–50 adults with dementia who live at home but want social activities, with on-site caregivers and even a no-cash store environment. Modeled on Amsterdam’s Hogeweyk, the project aims to redefine memory care in the U.S., though skeptics question how easily the model can be replicated nationwide as dementia prevalence rises.

Geri Taylor, a former executive, experienced cognitive decline and was diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer's. Despite this setback, Geri and her husband continue to advocate for Alzheimer's patients and their caregivers, emphasizing the need for ethical treatment and increased research funding for the disease.
