Nepal Flood Toll Surpasses 900 as Climate Blame and Pilgrim Tragedy Dominate Response
The death toll from the August 26 glacial flood in Nepal and Tibet has risen to over 1,000, with approximately 4,200 people still missing. The disaster, triggered by a magnitude 5.2 seismic event from a glacial collapse, has prompted Nepal to seek $5 billion in international aid. While the U.S. State Department confirms 13 Americans have reached safety, roughly 80 remain unaccounted for, many of whom were pilgrims. Nepal has explicitly linked the event to human-caused climate change, requesting urgent support from a U.N. climate fund that currently lacks sufficient funding due to donor reluctance.
