Intel Unveils 8 Core 528 Thread Processor with Advanced Silicon Photonics

Intel showcased an 8-core processor with 66 threads per core, featuring a direct mesh-to-mesh optical fabric for hyper-sparse data processing as part of the DARPA HIVE program. The processor utilizes a RISC ISA and is packed into 16 sockets in a single OCP compute thread, leveraging optical networking for high-speed data transfer. The chips employ silicon photonics for on-die optical networking, enabling direct connections between chips without the need for switches and NICs. The power consumption is primarily attributed to silicon photonics, and the technology is being developed on TSMC 7nm.
