Shimano launches SPD-SLR: a lighter, lower, more adjustable road pedal system
Shimano has unveiled SPD-SLR, its first major road-pedal update in 23 years, delivering a lighter, lower-stack system with about 2.3mm less stack height (roughly 12.3mm total) and a 10.5° engagement, plus wider lateral cleat adjustment. New red/blue/yellow cleats weigh ~55g with fixed floats and aren’t compatible with SPD-SL, and the pedals (Dura-Ace PD-R9300 and Ultegra PD-R8200) feature redesigned bearings and engagement for improved feel. New SH-RC9/RC8/S-RC810 S-Phyre shoes are designed to maximize the system’s benefits. Shimano notes compatibility with current SPD-SL shoes but the new kit is best for performance, and the article also compares low-stack rivals like Wahoo Speedplay, Ekoi PW8, and Q36.5/SRM.
