Heat Explains Pioneer Drift, Not New Physics

New analysis shows the decades-long Pioneer anomaly—the small sunward drift of Pioneer 10 and 11—was caused by asymmetric thermal radiation from the spacecraft’s plutonium-238 RTGs and electronics, not a breakdown of gravity; detailed archival data and thermal modeling by Turyshev and colleagues demonstrated that the recoil from emitted infrared photons pushed the probes backward, a tiny, decaying force that disappeared as the fuel decayed, leaving general relativity intact while the probes continue to drift outward.

Unveiling the Wonders of Interstellar Travel and Communication

Although interstellar travel is currently impossible, imagining a starship tour through the Milky Way allows us to explore fascinating cosmic destinations. The journey begins with a stop alongside Pioneer 11, one of the first probes to leave our solar system. Next, we visit the Orion nebula, a stellar nursery where new stars are born. We then encounter a protoplanetary disc, where planets form around young stars. Continuing the tour, we arrive at Trappist-1e, an extrasolar planet with potential for life. Finally, we witness the spectacular supernova of Betelgeuse and admire the grandeur of the Milky Way before returning home to Earth, a unique and precious planet in the vastness of the universe.
