Singapore’s Unplanted Reef Structures Show Natural Coral Settlement Outpaces Transplant Efforts
In 2018, JTC and NParks installed eight artificial reef structures off Small Sister’s Island in Singapore. By February 2022, the two structures left unplanted had accumulated 95 coral colonies from seven genera through natural settlement, while the six planted structures held 1,961 colonies from 43 genera. The unplanted structures serve as a control to measure natural recruitment rates.
