Gravity Surveys Reveal 1 Billion Tons of Hidden Ice in Utah's Rock Glaciers
A new study from the University of Utah reveals that rock glaciers in the state hold approximately 1 billion tons of ice, a volume comparable to the Great Pyramid of Giza. Using gravimeters instead of traditional radar, researchers mapped the hidden ice beneath Mount Timpanogos, finding it is 83% ice and 17% rock. This discovery highlights a massive, previously unquantified water reserve in the arid American West, with global estimates suggesting 48 billion tons of ice are hidden in similar formations worldwide.
