The Webb Space Telescope has discovered an exoplanet, VHS 1256b, with dense, gritty clouds swirling in its atmosphere. The planet has a 22-hour day and is located far from the two stars it orbits. Its upper atmosphere appears to have silicate clouds with the consistency of smoke, while deeper clouds are made of larger grains. The exoplanet's clouds are piping hot, about as hot as a candle flame. The astronomers also detected clear signs of water, methane, and carbon monoxide, as well as some signs of carbon dioxide. As VHS 1256b ages, scientists believe it will cool off, and the hefty cloud cover in its skies may dissipate.

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has discovered sand storms on a "super Jupiter" planet called VHS 1256b, which is 235 trillion miles away from Earth. The clouds on the planet are made up of scorching hot, tiny sand-like particles known as silicates. Webb's ability to analyze the entire infrared spectrum of starlight passing through the planet's atmosphere has allowed astronomers to identify the largest number of molecules ever identified all at once on a planet outside our solar system, including water, methane, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. The planet is a "super Jupiter" that's 12 to 18 times the size of our solar system's Jupiter and orbits two stars over a period of about 10,000 years.

The James Webb Space Telescope has detected a dust storm on the exoplanet VHS 1256b, located about 40 light-years from Earth.
