James Webb Space Telescope Uncovers Surprising Galaxies and Challenges Our Understanding of the Universe

Astronomers analyzing the first images of an early galaxy taken by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have discovered a companion galaxy, estimated to be 1.4 billion years old, that has already hosted multiple generations of stars, which was unexpected given its young age. The two galaxies are approximately the same distance from Earth and in the same neighborhood, suggesting they may interact and potentially merge. The mature metallicity of these galaxies has led scientists to speculate that star formation must have been very efficient and started early in the universe.
